The Taylors TerraCycle® Scheme
Roughly a 2 minute read
The grocery items that sit in our homes are starting to look a little different, tell a different story and some will be proudly shouting about their eco-friendly credentials. Many companies from food to retail are working hard to change the materials their products are packed, shipped and displayed in to be kinder to our planet. We know this isn’t new news, we’ve actually been working to change the materials in our packaging for many years, but we’re not quite there yet.
In the meantime, we’ve heard you loud and clear, that being able to recycle your flexible coffee packaging is important. So we’ve teamed up with an amazing company called TerraCycle®, who offer a recycling solution for those tricky items that can’t currently be recycled by your local council. A lot of items, from our flexible coffee packaging to plastic pet food pouches and crisp packets, can be recycled through TerraCycle®’s recycling programmes and it’s super easy!
You can now start saving up all your flexible coffee packaging, from the ground and beans pouches to coffee bag sachets, for safe recycling through the Taylors TerraCycle® programme. We also accept other coffee brands packaging too. If you want to find out more about how you can join the Taylors of Harrogate Recycling Programme, swing by their website for a full how-to.
Our current packaging
Taylors coffee — ground, beans and bags — is packaged in an oil-based, laminate foil made up of different plastics and a metalised layer. That’s been chosen because it keeps our coffee at its best, super fresh and high quality from our factory to your mug, but it isn’t widely recyclable. Our aim is to switch our coffee packaging to a film made from just one type of plastic – Polyethylene, also known as PE – which would be widely recyclable, but will also keep your coffee fresh.
Moving from mixed material films to one made of just one type of plastic – in this case PE – is a key focus area of the UK Plastics Pact and we’re working hard on this change. Beyond this, our goal as a business, is to make all our products, present and future, circular in design. This will take time and a lot of testing to make sure the materials we choose remain kind to the planet. As well as this, we’re working on a wide range of other sustainability projects, including supporting our farmers and their communities at origin — from finding out what they need from a fair living wage, to accessing of clean water.
On top of this, we’re working hard to reduce our impact on the climate and this is continuous. Because of this commitment, our business and all our coffee is CarbonNeutral®.
