Our Supplier of the Year award is our way of celebrating suppliers who go the extra mile when it comes to producing the best quality and working sustainably.
2020 has been a year where our suppliers have shown great resilience and demonstrated their commitment to caring for their communities through challenging times.
Our winners this year are Lujeri Tea Estates in Malawi and La Bastilla Coffee Estate in Nicaragua.
It’s the second time Lujeri, one of our strategic suppliers has won our Supplier of the Year award, the last time in 2012. Lujeri Tea Estates are one of our most well calibrated suppliers. They always go the extra mile to achieve not just the quality we need for Yorkshire Tea but to support us in our ambition to influence systemic change to build a resilient tea community in Mulanje, Malawi.
Lujeri make every effort to produce the tea we’re looking for — from the tea bushes they plant to sending their head factory manager to Harrogate to immerse themselves in all things Yorkshire Tea so they could truly understand our requirements. Lujeri have also joined us in multi stakeholder programmes such as Malawi 2020 — an industry partnership to help close the Living Wage gap for tea workers. Time and time again they demonstrate what it truly is to be industry leaders.
For more than a decade we’ve been sourcing Rainforest Alliance certified Nicaraguan coffee from La Bastilla. Throughout this time they’ve consistently provided excellent service and high-quality coffee which is a perfect component for Taylors blends. In recent years, we have featured two different La Bastilla coffees in our Taylors Discovery range — including La Bastilla Sky Island — demonstrating some of their best coffee.
They’re committed to education, and on the estate over 200 children from the local community attend a primary school built by La Bastilla. A further 70 young people study at their technical college. As part of Taylors Value Chain Investment fund, we have sponsored two students each year since we started the relationship.
