Healthcare
Roughly a 1 minute read
Good healthcare in tea and coffee growing regions can be hard to come by. Their rural locations often mean that communities lack access to doctors and medical facilities and it’s hard for farmers to regularly travel to the city for their medical needs.
We’re working with some of our suppliers to bring better care directly to farmers and workers, and since 2016 we’ve supported the Kenyan Tea Development Agency, our biggest tea supplier, to run medical camps around their tea growing regions.
People who visit the health camps are offered potentially lifesaving screenings for prostate, cervical and breast cancer as well as wellness testing (blood pressure, blood sugar and HIV), treatment for minor ailments, reproductive health services, and education on nutrition and healthy living habits.
We’re also helping to strengthen ongoing healthcare with a focus on preventing diseases by providing community members with more information on good nutrition and behaviour change.
We’ve also been helping communities in Kenya and Uganda to make improvements to maternal care. Women often have to travel long distances to find medical support and equipment when they’re giving birth, so making sure that there are suitable settings in the communities is essential. We’ve supported projects in Kenya and Uganda to build new maternity wards which will enable women to access affordable and easy essential maternity and health services in the future.
